| POSC Specifications Version 2.2 | Epicentre Logical Data Model |
Epicentre V2.0 proposes the concept of FOSSIL_TAXON. Our micropaleontologists have another business need. Explanation: When studying a PALEONTOLOGY SLIDE the geologist is not describing one particular fossil. He tries to determine to which TAXONOMIC UNIT a group of fossils (or only one) is typical. In this context, fossils are only viewed as specimens and not as individuals. That is why we need the concept that we call: FOSSIL POPULATION. At the present time, to cover our business need, we use the entity MATERIAL COMPOSITION. But this is not really satisfactory. When the micropaleontologist is determining in which TAXONOMIC UNIT is a FOSSIL POPULATION, he needs to be precise about some specific characteristics (attributes for FOSSIL POPULATION): 1) REPRESENTATIVITY: means that the population is not in place or is probably due to caving in the borehole. 2) QUALITY OF THE TEST: means a population is represented only with frags. 3) CERTAINTY: qualifies the degree of certainty of the determination. In this case, micropaleontologists have a specific Latin vocabulary: "aff." (AFFINIS), "cf." (CONFERE), "sp.", "spp.", "spsp.", "gr.", "exgr.", "indet.".
