laser range finder A device that measures laser beam travel times, and hence distances, between transmitters and receivers, some involving one-way paths, others with two-way paths. POSC 2.1 current
acoustic range finder A device that measures acoustic travel times, and hence distances, between transmitters and receivers, some involving one-way paths, others with two-way paths. POSC 2.1 current
theodolite A device that measures angles and subtended lengths in orientable directions, usually in the earth's horizontal plane and perpendicular thereto. POSC 2.1 current
fluxgate magnetometer A device which allows the user to find the orientation in three dimensions of the local magnetic field by measuring the difference in magnetic flux between two gates. (Spradley, "Surv. & Nav. for Geoph. Expl.") POSC 2.1 current
planetable and alidade The plane table is a drawing board attached to a tripod by means of a pivoting head. An alidade is a small telescope with a moveable base, a scale for measuring vertical angles and a magnetic compass for aligning the instrument. The base has a straightedge aligned parallel to the barrel of the telescope. Some method for measuring horizontal distance is also usually built into the device. (Spradley, "Surv. & Nav. for Geoph. Expl." ) POSC 2.1 current
loran receiver A system of long-range navigation in which pulsed signals sent out by two pairs of radio stations are used by navigators to determine the geographical position of an object. POSC 2.1 current
doppler sonar A device used in dead-reckoning navigation that uses the Doppler effect to measure the velocity of a vessel by bouncing sonar waves off the ocean bottom in four directions. (Spradley, "Surv. & Nav. for Geoph. Expl." ) POSC 2.1 current
doppler satellite A method of location measurement based on signals broadcast from an orbiting satellite. (Spradley, "Surv. & Nav. for Geoph. Expl.") POSC 2.1 current
GPS Geographic Position System. It measures latitude, longitude, z based on a pseudo-range, carrier phase measurement. The orbit scheme is high altitude, inclined. POSC 2.1 current
Transit It measures latitude, longitude, x, y, z, based on a doppler frequency shift. The orbit scheme is low altitude, polar. POSC 2.1 current
Glonass It measures latitude, longitude, based on a pseudo-range, carrier phase measurement. The orbit scheme is high altitude, inclined. POSC 2.1 current
Starfix It measures latitude, longitude, based on a range measurement. The orbit scheme is geostationary. POSC 2.1 current
