10.1 ISO Latin 1 code table

Notes for Figure 20a.

The table in Figure 20a shows the correct characters for ISO Latin 1, as defined by the standard, ISO 8859-1:1987. The characters 252₈ (ORDFEMININE) and 272₈ (ORDMASCULINE) should each have an under-bar. Some printers erroneously omit the under-bars in the display of these characters.
ISO 8859-1 defines 47₈ to be APOSTROPHE and 140₈ to be GRAVE ACCENT. The "PostScript Language Reference Manual", Second Edition, of Adobe Systems Incorporated, defines these characters in its ISO Latin 1 Encoding Vector to be quoteright and quoteleft. These look similar to the visual representations in ISO 8859-1 (ISO Latin 1), but they do differ slightly for most fonts.
