POSC Specifications
Version 2.2
CGM*PIP
Volume 2 - PIP/III/1 and PIP/IV/1

Preface

Background

Petrotechnical Open Software Corporation (POSC) is a not-for-profit membership corporation dedicated to defining an open computing environment for technical applications termed the software integration platform. Developed for the international oil and gas Exploration and Production (E&P) industry, the software integration platform is a set of specifications that addresses:

The goal of these specifications is to provide oil and gas organizations with methods to manage data resources and to support integrated multi-disciplinary projects. Using the POSC software integration platform contributes to this goal by improving the portability, scalability and interoperability of technical applications.

About This Volume

This book is Volume 2 of a two-volume set comprising the POSC Specification, CGM*PIP, Petroleum Industry Profile for CGM, which is one component of the software integration platform. The specification as a whole establishes the requirements to be met when two-dimensional graphical picture data that is vector or mixed vector and raster is used in the graphical interchange between petrotechnical applications employed in petroleum Exploration and Production (E&P) and related applications, using the format of the Computer Graphics Metafile (CGM).

Volume 1 of the specification defines the core profiles of CGM:1992 elements, and defines extensions for both Seismic Traces and Continuous Rendering. Two PIP profiles are defined in Volume 1 -- designated
PIP/I and PIP/II.

Volume 2 defines extensions for drawing well logs. This volume defines two more PIP profiles -- designated PIP/III and PIP/IV.

POSC encourages the petroleum industry to use this book as a specification for acquiring and developing applications and implementations.

The contents of this document are based on three main inputs: the work of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG) Graphics Standards Subcommittee [1] 1, [2]; a POSC Request for Comments (RFC) on Graphics Metafile Format [3]; the CGM*PIP project document [4]. The SEG requirements document contains a number of recommendations for metafile capabilities. The philosophy of PIP/III and PIP/IV is to provide those features from the SEG Recommendations which received favorable responses from the RFC respondents.

Compliance Note

The entire PIP document (both Volumes) is provided in electronic form. In all cases, the official reference for compliance with the specifications stated herein shall be the hard copy master maintained by POSC. Refer to the Compliance Note in the Preface of Volume 1 for additional information.

History of PIP/III and PIP/IV Development

The development history of PIP/I and PIP/II is described in the Preface of Volume 1.

The PIP/III and PIP/IV efforts essentially started with the work of the SEG Graphics Standards Subcommittee, where it was realized that a metafile for the exchange of graphics within the E&P community could not be complete unless it included Well Log and Mapping/Contouring primitives. This requirement was carried into the initial PIP Project, but was not pursued due to time and funding limitations. The transfer of the PIP effort to POSC provided the necessary environment where the extensions could be developed. The need for such a set of extensions was verified by the E&P industry through their responses to the POSC RFC on Graphics Metafile Format issued in January 1994. The Basic Well Log extensions of PIP/III and the Advanced Well Log extensions of PIP/IV follow the recommendations received in the RFC responses and represent a portion of the work undertaken by the POSC Plot/Hardcopy Work Group.

POSC as Maintenance Provider

POSC is the maintenance provider for the CGM*PIP specification. All defects, problem reports, questions, comments, and recommendations for future enhancements should be directed to the POSC Help Desk: help@posc.org.

Future PIP Releases

This release completes POSC's current work on CGM extensions. Work on a new PIP specification, covering extensions for mapping and contouring, is anticipated. POSC urges users and developers to submit requirements in those subject areas and to participate in the development of the specifications.
