POSC Specifications
Version 2.2
CGM*PIP
Volume 2 - PIP/III/1 and PIP/IV/1

Section 1 - Scope, Goals and Criteria

1.1 Scope and Goals

PIP Volume 1 defines the overall Scope and Goals of CGM*PIP, as well as the specific goals of PIP/I and PIP/II (see Volume 1, Section 1). The overall concepts apply to the PIP/III and PIP/IV specifications of this volume as well.

This Volume defines PIP/III/1 and PIP/IV/1 - Revision 1 of two profiles of Version 3 metafiles as defined in the CGM:1992 standard.

The specific statements of scope of Volume 1, section 1.1 are equally valid for the PIP/III and PIP/IV definitions in this volume. However the scope articulated in item 3 of that section, "Define, clarify, document, and give legal standard encodings to CGM extensions in common use within the community, including the extensions known as Seismic Trace Extensions.", is modified and expanded. It is within the scope of PIP/III to define a set of Basic Well Log Extensions and within the scope of PIP/IV to define a set of Advanced Well Log Extensions for use within the E&P community.

1.2 Criteria

The specific criteria defined in Volume 1, section 1.2, are relevant as well to the development of PIP/III and PIP/IV.

In particular, it is a criterion for PIP/III and PIP/IV developments that a valid PIP/I metafile should be a valid PIP/III metafile, a valid PIP/II metafile should be a valid PIP/III metafile, and a valid PIP/III metafile should be a valid PIP/IV metafile.

In addition, it is a criterion for development of PIP/III and PIP/IV that the requirements articulated in the work of the SEG Graphics Standards Subcommittee should be satisfied to the highest degree consistent with the other criteria of PIP, and consistent with the results of the POSC RFC on Graphics Metafile Format.

1.3 Present scope and future enhancements

The extensions defined by this release of PIP/III and PIP/IV are limited to Basic Well Log Extensions and Advanced Well Log Extensions, respectively. It is within the scope of a petroleum industry profile of CGM to address requirements and extensions for the application areas of mapping and contouring as well. These extensions are anticipated in a future release of PIP.

One item which received much interest during PIP/I and PIP/II development was Lithology Patterns and Oilfield Symbols. Systemization and standardization of sets of Lithology Patterns and Oilfield Symbols are within the scope of a petroleum industry profile of CGM. The item was postponed as beyond the scope and resources of PIP/I and PIP/II. This release of PIP/III and PIP/IV does not address the definition and incorporation of sets of standard patterns and symbols. They could be addressed in a future upgrade to PIP, for example by a maintenance release of PIP/III and PIP/IV. To achieve such an upgrade, standard sets must be defined, and, if symbol library functionality is to be used, then the associated CGM:1992 Version 3 elements must be enabled for use in PIP (they are currently disallowed).
