W3C - Architecture Domain

The W3C XML Activity is part of the Architecture Domain. The XML Activity Statement explains the W3C's work on this topic in more detail.

The current W3C Recommendations are XML 1.0, Feb '98 and Namespaces, Jan '99. The XML FAQ (University College Cork) provides a wealth of introductory and background information on XML.

Several efforts are being coordinated by the XML Coordination Group (web pages are for members only):
XML Schema Working Group: Addressing means for defining the structure, content and semantics of XML documents
XML Linking Working Group: Designing hypertext links for XML. Working drafts of XML Linking Language (XLink) and XML Pointer Language (XPointer).
XML Information Set Working Group: Looking at more abstract descriptions of XML documents in terms of document tree structures, elements, their attribute lists and so on.
XML Fragment Working Group: Working to define a way to send fragments of an XML document without having to send all or part of the parent document as well.
XML Syntax Working Group: Concerned with several aspects of XML: style sheet linking, XML profile, canonicalizing XML, and internationalization.

OAGI is a non-profit industry consortium comprised of many prominent stakeholders (see Members list) in the business software component interoperability arena. It was formed in February, 1995 in response to the rapidly expanding problem of tying disparate software applications together.
The XML architecture appendix is a big step toward providing the entirety of the OAGIS content in a consistent electronic format.

OASIS is a nonprofit, international consortium dedicated to accelerating the adoption of product-independent formats based on public standards. These standards include SGML, XML (XSL, XLL), HTML and CGM as well as others that are related to structured information processing. Members of OASIS are providers, users and specialists of the technologies that make these standards work in practice. The SGML/XML Web site is a comprehensive site about all things XML including links, specifications, and industry-specific XML work.

OpenXML is an open source, pure Java, commercial grade, fully featured framework for XML-based applications. OpenXML covers the entire spectrum of XML document production, processing and publishing making it suitable for a variety of uses including application to application communication, content publishing and human interface.

XML.ORG is designed to provide a credible source of accurate, timely information about the application of XML in industrial and commercial settings and to serve as a reference repository for specific XML standards such as vocabularies, DTDs, schemas, and namespaces.

The goals of the Apache XML Project project are:
  • to provide commercial-quality standards-based XML solutions that are developed in an open and cooperative fashion,
  • to provide feedback to standards bodies (such as IETF and W3C) from an implementation perspective, and
  • to be a focus for XML-related activies within Apache projects

The Apache XML Project project currently consists of four sub- projects, each focused on a different aspect of XML:

  • Xerces - XML parsers in Java, C++, and Perl
  • Xalan - XSLT stylesheet processors, in Java and C++
  • Cocoon - XML-based web publishing, in Java
  • FOP - XSL formatting objects, in Java
