Southwest POSC Industry Action Group

There is an activity underway within the POSC membership to establish a Southwest POSC Industry Action Group. The purpose of this group is to provide an industry forum to openly promote action, identify road blocks, collaboratively find solutions to accelerate the acceptance and use of POSC specifications. Formation of this Action Group is an outgrowth of the recommendations of a Task Force that was formed in September 1996, to examine the effectiveness of the current POSC meeting format.

By way of background, POSC uses an 'open process' similar to the Open Software Foundation (OSF) to interact and communicate with its membership and the petroleum industry. By and large, the main communications mechanism has been through Special Interest Groups (SIGs), which are for members only. Based on member evaluation and feedback, the Task Force uncovered a need to communicate and market outside the POSC membership. Accordingly the Task Force recommended the formation of regional user groups to expand the opportunities for in-depth information exchange out into the industry as a whole.

Two POSC member companies, Mobil and ARCO, volunteered to lead out in forming the first group, the Southwest POSC Industry Action Group. A 'strawman', which was presented at the June 1997 Member General Meeting in Houston, received the support of the members and POSC. As a result, a committee of POSC and non-POSC companies has been formed to organize this Action Group.

The Southwest POSC Industry Action Group has scheduled a session at the November 1997 SEG Conference in Dallas to host its first event. The objective of this first event will be to highlight selected initiatives in the industry and to communicate what these initiatives (specifically the respective companies ) are doing to drive toward POSC specifications. In addition, the Action Group will use this SEG event as an opportunity for companies and individuals to apply for membership.
