POSC Practical Well Log Standards (PWLS) SIG
This page describes the POSC Practical Well Log Standards (PWLS) SIG.
POSC defines general SIG Guidelines which address charters,
participation, resources, fees, neutrality, and the key deliverables:
periodic publication of consensus requirements for good practices,
industry standards, and solution product and service features.
Description and Purpose
The purpose of the PWLS SIG is to represent the users of log curve
data and the PWLS standard. The SIG's objectives are
to raise new consensus needs and requirements, to review new and
evolving aspects of the standards, and to promote the use of the
standard by exchange experiences and other means. The SIG is
organized into regional groups, currently in Norway, the UK, and the US.
Other regions will be considered.
As an illustration, the kinds of consensus requirements generated by
the PWLS SIG
will include these points developed at the SIG meetings in 2002:
- Initiation of an ongoing Web-based service of publishing
acquisition company data linked with PWLS standard classifications.
- Publication and support for the standard name and classifications for composited (joined) and
interpreted well log curves.
- Review and editing of the proposed standard names and
classifications for logging tools-logs-services.
- Continue seeking the inclusion of acquisition company information
from more companies.
- Continue the effort to classify curve classes for additional kinds of tools.
- During 2002 and early 2003, there was an emphasis on resolving the
dual classification issue from PWLS Version 1. SIG feedback on this
issue led to the formulation of PWLS Version 2, which does resolve
the dual classification issue.
Scope
The SIG addresses well logging tools and curves, identifying, naming,
and classifying the most important tools and curves in support of
business processes, such as
cataloguing log and curve data and searching for available logs and curves.
Ongoing Objectives
- Support for the publishing service company data and mapping to PWLS standard classifications.
- Publication and support for the standard mnemonics and classifications for
oil company generated composited (joined) and
interpreted well log curves.
- Publication and support for the standard classifications for logging
services and tools.
- Continue seeking the inclusion of service company information
from more service companies.
- Continue the effort to classify high and medium value curve classes
for additional kinds of tools.
General SIG Guidelines and Limitations
- Focus on business activities that users agree should be described
and carried out in a non-competitive manner
- Focus on consistent aspects of business activities that will
contribute to individual company and overall quality and
productivity improvements.
- Ensure effective dialogue among participants.
- Ensure equal access to the consensus results.
- Ensure time effective publication of results.
- Seek participation by qualified experts in each subject area.
- Seek to move industry standards to be more usable and solution
products and services to be more standards-based within
non-competitive areas.
- Define consensus requirements, but do not define specifications
leaving that to designated standards development processes (inside
POSC and elsewhere).
- Consider sponsorship of pilot implementations to test concepts
under consideration.
Status
- March - June 2002 - A first series of regional PWLS SIG meetings
were held in Norway, the UK, and the US.
- July - December 2002 - Regional PWLS SIG meetings were held in
Houston, Aberdeen, and Stavanger.
- January - June 2003 - Regional PWLS SIG meetings were deferred
pending the publication of the revised and expanded PWLS Version 2
specifications.
- July - December 2003 - Regional PWLS SIG meetings will be
scheduled primarily to review plans of oil companies and software
companies to use PWLS Version 2.
