Introduction

The initial Rock Features Workshop meetings were held in Houston on January 16 and London on January 23.

This summary will review the objectives for workshop, proposals made for improvements to Epicentre, action items for future discussions, and gather plans for future meetings.

Meeting Objectives

One of the key objectives of these meetings was to establish feedback on the use of geologic data in Epicentre. The immediate concern is to inform members of change requests to the model, and design and test solutions for release in V 2.2 by mid 1997. Also important is to encourage communication about implementation approaches. Essential services that members expect f rom POSC include:

  1. Provide Usage Examples and Guidance

  2. Coordinate shared footprints and proposed standard data

  3. Establish convenient formats for illustrating model intentions including, example data, Express-I schema, and physical implementations

Proposals for Improvements to Epicentre

Proposals for enhancements to Epicentre are grouped into six categories arising from written submissions and during discussion including:

  1. Allow multiple classification of Rock features (Saga, Schlumberger, Elf)

  2. Resolve many to many relationship between Geologic_features (Schlumberger)

  3. Develop the capability to describe Petroleum Systems (Elf)

  4. Allow explicit description of "missing section" (Mobil, Schlumberger)

  5. Further develop the capability to depict Prospects / Plays (Elf)

  6. Enhance functionality of Geologic_process (Elf)

Specific change request proposals for these categories are directed toward redesign of Rock_feature to enhance material class and typical material capabilities. Other proposals would allow feature associations and relationships between Geologic features. "Non-existence" of an instance is a new feature. Additional modeling is required to extend functionality of Epicentre into new areas like Petroleum systems and may not be ready for V 2.2.

Action Items

Schedule

At the last meeting there was no agreement on where or when to schedule the next meeting or if these issues could take place via email and phone conferencing. Currently there is a tentative date for meeting February 13 in either London or Houston. Please register your opinion on where and when you want to meet by return email to me no later than next Monday 3rd February 1997 so we can make arrangements.
