Project Overview

The Interoperability & Business Objects (IBO) Project has proceeded through several stages over the past few years, including member workshops, member workgroups, a Request for Comments cycle, a Request for Technology cycle, and the publication of a specification snapshot.

Since the publication of the specification snapshot in April 1999, the project has been inactive pending further specification and software development work by the Request for Technology (RFT) submitters.
  • The OpenSpirit Alliance and PrismTech are revising and expanding the Subsurface Interpretation submission material in the course of developing commercial products that have been announced for release in Q2 of 2000.
  • The OMEGA II Project, source of one of the RFT submissions has been completed.
  • There is expressed interest in expanding the scope of work in interoperability specifications, particularly in the Drilling Domain and further in the Subusrface Interpretaion Domain. The form and timing of this specification work is not yet clear.
  • The OpenSpirit Alliance started work on specifications for E&P Viewer Services in 1999. POSC and OpenSpirit conducted a workshop on this work in June 1999. The meeting notes from the workshop are available.
  • POSC conducted a Request for Comments (RFC) in the area of Application Interaction services and protocols in 1999. The responses to the RFC are available. POSC and OpenSpirit conducted a workshop on this RFC. The meeting notes from the workshop are available.

New projects will be organized as member interest warrants, either to do further work on the Subsurface Interpretation Domain specifications or to work in other areas. To express interest in organizing an interoperability project, please contact Those members interested in helping to form such a group, please contact Alan Doniger (Doniger@POSC.org).

Member interest is encouraged for the formation of an Interoperability and Business Objects Focus Group.
  • to encourage coordination among project developing interoperability and business object specifications.
  • to help manage the incremental development process, encouraging projects to use what has already been defined and to share what they are doing.
  • to actively encourage coordination of plans and technical approaches.
  • to manage a dialogue on the guidelines and procedures used by POSC for developing and distributing interoperability specifications.

Those members interested in helping to form such a group, please contact Alan Doniger (Doniger@POSC.org).

Project Funding
The work done in 1999 to prepare and publish the interoperability specification snapshots was funded primarily by five project sponsor companies: Chevron, Elf, PrismTech, Shell, and Statoil. Membership fees support ongoing support activities, including coordination with other ongoing projects. New interoperability project work will be funded by a combination of membership fees and project fees, as appropriate.

1999 Revised RFT Submissions
Between the completion of the Request for Technology (RFT) process in September 1998 and the publication of the Specification Snapshot in April 1999, POSC worked with the RFT submitter companies to address the issues and limitations identified in the RFT Evaluation Report. During the conduct of this work, POSC received several subsequent revised submissions. These submissions represent ongoing work by related projects, including:
  • Project OMEGA II (completed in April 1999)
  • OpenSpirit Subsurface Interpretation Version 1 (commercial beta release at the end of May 1999)
  • OpenSpirit Subsurface Interpretation Version 2 (initial release at the end of July 1999)

As indicated above, additional submissions are anticipated from OpenSpirit Alliance and PrismTech based on their current commercial development work.

1999 Specification Snapshots
During the first few months of 1999, the project team used revised submission materials and the RFT evaluation results as the basis for the preparation of interoperability specification snapshots in March and April 1999. These snapshots are not of sufficient completeness or quality to be formal specification releases. They are the first iterations that should lead to a formal interoperability specification release at a future date.

The snapshots are posted on the POSC Web site for review by the submitters, by POSC members, and by other projects that are involved in the definition of interoperability specifications using business objects.
