Epicentre Environment Survey
For Migration of Epicentre Data to V2.2

April 2, 1997

Purpose:

POSC will provide its customers with tools to migrate data from their current V2.0 or V2.1 POSC Data Store (PDS) to V2.2. To do this we need to identify the existing (pre-V2.2) environment for Epicentre data, applications, and users. This information will be used to focus the development of the migration tool. A secondary purpose is to understand current patterns of population and usage of Epicentre.

How to Respond to This Survey:

A fill-in form is provided below for you to enter your survey responses. When complete, just click on the Send button at the bottom of the form to submit your responses to POSC.

IMPORTANT: The Send button only works with Netscape or other browsers that support the "mailto" tag. If you are using a browser that does not support the "mailto" tag, or if you are not sure, please use one of the alternate methods described below. We are working to correct this situation and will update this page when the fix is available.

Note About Multiple POSC Data Stores:

The questions on this survey assume one PDS per company. If you have multiple PDSs, please submit multiple copies of the survey. A survey response may characterize data stores company-wide, or for the respondent's division, or the data stores he personally administers. We need to understand the organizational scope of your response, and whether we should expect additional survey responses from other divisions within your company.

Importance Of Your Response:

It is VERY IMPORTANT that you RESPOND TO THIS SURVEY! Migration of Epicentre data stores is a new, complex, and challenging topic, and the POSC staff and tool developers don't claim to have all of the answers. POSC will keep track of and communicate the nature and resolution of issues which arise during the design, development, and use of the migration tool. If you don't respond to this survey, you should not assume that the migration tool will satisfactorily address your migration requirements, or even that your issues will be recognized.

Thanks for your help and cooperation. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please feel free to contact:

  • Cary Purdy: (713)267-5123 for all other feedback.

      Company-wide? Yes No
If answer `No', please identify other divisions and/or individuals to survey:

    3. Owner of data, system administrator, main POSC contact for migration issues:

      Participation:

    4. Are you willing to participate in the migration development process? Yes No

    5. Be a beta test site? Yes No

    6. Provide test data? Yes No

      Data Stores:

Characterize the Epicentre data stores your organization has populated:

    7. How is the data store used?
      If select `Other', please specify:

    8. Currently in use? Yes No

    9. Frequency of use?
      If select `Other', please specify:

    10. Frequency of update?
      If select `Other', please specify:

    11. Are the data store contents a copy of data from another source? Yes No

If answer `Yes', what is the form of the master (Note: The migration tool is currently envisioned to work against PDSs only)?

      If select `Other', please specify:

    12. If, for example, a local data store's contents are periodically copied from a warehouse, is it reasonable to use the migration tool to migrate the warehouse contents only? Yes No

    13. Numbers/kinds of users and applications:
      Number of Users:
      Kinds of Users:
      Number of Applications:
      Kinds of Applications:

    14. What would be an unacceptably long migration?
      If select `Other', please specify:

    15. What is the estimated marginal cost of duration of the migration process? Be specific, e.g., "data store X is a project data store which is in continuous business-critical use; a migration from V2.1 to V2.2 in two days saves $10,000 compared to a migration which takes three days; a migration which takes one day saves an additional $825". (One may want it blindingly fast, or feel that a 'good' programmer could make it so ... but that isn't what this question is about).

    16. Size of data store?

    17. What percent is bulk data (information represented by 'frames' in Epicentre: well log traces, seismic trace data, ...)?

    18. What percent of bulk data is stored as 'accessible offline', e.g., transparent access to LIS or SEG-Y data files via bulk data access library (BDAL)?

    19. Populated domain:
      If select `Other', please specify:

      Model:

    20. Which Epicentre version?
      As released? Yes No
      If answer `No':
      • Subset? Yes No
        If answer `Yes', specify:
      • Extensions? Yes No
        If answer `Yes', specify:

    21. Relational Projection as released with Epicentre version? Yes No
      • Modifications? Yes No
        If answer `Yes', specify:
      • Extensions? Yes No
        If answer `Yes', specify:

    22. Projection meta data present? Yes No
      As released? Yes No

    23. If model or projection are not as released, are meta data consistent with
model and projection as installed? Yes No
      If answer `Yes', how?

      Computing environment:

    24. What hardware?

    25. What operating system? Which version?

    26. What DBMS vendor? What product? Which version?

      Access to data:

    27. Direct SQL access by? Users, and/or Applications

    28. Logical access via layer? Yes No
      By Users, and/or Applications
      Which layer:
      If `Other' selected, please specify:

      Which version?
Did you change it? Yes No
      If answer `Yes', how?

    29. Combination of access approaches? Yes No
