Discussion

The meeting in Norway tried to determine whether there are a common set of attributes that will minimally describe, at a meta data level, significant components in the various Repositories. Furthermore if there are, can agreement be reached on definitions of these items such that in the future global searches could be conducted with some confidence.

It was agreed that a National Repository will typically have the following components:

In this first exercise it was agreed that four basic components would be considered; Well, Company, Licensing and Entitlement. The other significant component relates to seismic navigation data but time did not allow that to be addressed at this meeting.

For the components selected the items that minimally describe the data are shown below (see Data Defintions). It was agreed that for each of these items and components the various Repositories would share their definitions of the data. This would be achieved by lodging them on a web page to be maintained by POSC. POSC would be asked if they could provide a resource to review these definitions and, after comparing with the current Epicentre definition, suggest a definition that could be adopted across all repositories.

If the above can be achieved then these agreed definitions could be turned into a neutral POSC specification for the components. Each Repository could then produce a mapping from their Repository onto this neutral POSC specification and the possibility of effective searching across more than Repository becomes feasible.

To arrive at the this situation is a reasonable and achievable goal. Although it assumes technological advances it is worthwhile doing this planning work now whilst we wait for technology to catch us up.

Most present shared this goal and the Norwegian and UK Repositories agreed, that even if others could not contribute, they would take this work forward as data sharing across the North Sea median line was desirable.
